I remember thinking I was pretty special and grown-up for my Grandmother to take me to see a Lucille Ball movie at the Springs Theatre. I was 10 years old. I now realize that it was a straight shot down Nebraska Avenue from our Seminole Heights home. We were familiar with Sulphur Springs and the shopping arcade plus it was a treat to ride the city bus! We laughed out loud at the antics of Lucy & Ethele as they traveled in a silver camper -does anyone else remember that movie? She bought me my own box of popcorn and a coke! Back then theatres were supposed to be cavernous and dark. The Springs lived up to my expectations!

Seminole, was right behind HHS, it was a Sat. serial kids movie, Sem. Hts, Northtown, very unknown to my crowd, not our stomping ground, Springs, went there most, across from Springs pool, reg. path Sat., swimming a.m., movie after, also kids serial type, most well-known among Seminole Hts kids, Roxy, not us, too bummy, Garden, Green bldg, Nebraska ave, not on our list, out of our area, not too popular with us, never went there, Ybor City, Ritz, it also was a burlesque place in the 70s, porn movies, changed quickly. All of we High Schoolers were Drive-in nuts, Fun Lan, Tower, Hillsboro, Skyway, AutoPark, that was where we went in high school, only went to movies when I was around 5 yrs until 12 or so, Park Theater, was a one time visit while in High School, Three Coins in a Fountain, I remember, Bridget Bardot movie was a sensation there, not in our territory. I lived on Shadowlawn and 19th St. our first house, we took kids to Fun Lan, they loved it, we did too when they went to sleep, that was when the three dependents were very small. That's about it for me and the theatres, The Tampa, The Springs were my favorites, went to Springs almost every Sat. 14 cents to get in, my aunt was in ticket box. In Junior High all of us hung out mostly, Springs Pool, Ralston Beach, Colonial Beach, all on Egypt Lake, we danced to Juke box combed our Duck Tail haircuts, messed with the women, they also messed with us, that's fair! All of us guys had Elvis haircuts, and clothes, Pink and Black, was the color, I had Blue Suede Zipper shoes with tassle pulls, a real heart-breaker, tough guy, I thought. You name the place in Tampa, I've either been in it, know of it, or been thrown out of it, in 70s never dropped a drink, that went on for about 10 years or so, then rehab. then back to the grind, been here ever since, haven't seen it all, but didn't miss much!

We moved to the springs in 1961 and what a life it was to live there. The springs pool, arcade, tower out door theatre and the springs indoor theatre were the best things that ever happen to us growing up. We would save 6 bottle caps and would get into the theatre and watch movies like the 3 stooges, Dracula, Morgan the Pirate,Pysco (they would stop the movie right at the bottom of the stairs and ask the kids that had heart problems to go to the refreshment area). It was a great place. You could not be the springs area in the 60's. We lived down the end of 17th street near the north side of the river. I would give anything to go back to those days! They had night swimming at the springs too! You could get a hot dog and a drink for a quarter in the arcade. Great times there!

I have so many pleasant memories of Sulphur Springs during my youth. Like so many of the resorts in the Catskill Mountains in New York State, time was not kind to Sulphur Springs and it died a slow, painful death. These days, it breaks my heart to drive down Nebraska Avenue as I try to visualize what it once looked like in it's heyday. Here is a link with some additional information and pictures of what is left of Sulphur Springs. http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/fl/sulphursprings.html
If anyone would care to share/exchange information, memories, pics and post cards of Sulphur Springs in it's earlier days, please feel free to contact me directly at chuck.mueller@gmail.com

I was born and raised in Sulphur Springs. As a kid I loved going to the Springs Theatre on Saturday mornings to watch all the Cowboy movies. Many hours spent there watching movies over the years. We were poor but it was a great growing up time in my life.!!!

Hi history lovers! My name is Jamie Robe, and my friend Grant Wilson and I started a podcast a few weeks ago. We call it "A Drive About Tampa Bay", and that is literally what we are doing. We are driving to various spots in the area, where we talk about the history as we experienced it, as well as what we have learned from books and talking with others. I was born here in 1962 and my father was an artist here, who happened to know a lot about Florida history. He even did a cartoon on history in the Tampa Tribune - which became a book. I also lived on Rivershore Drive for many years as a teenager, within sight of the Sulphur Springs water tower.

My friend Grant moved here as a very young child and grew up swimming at the sulphur springs and Curiosity Creek. He tells about going to the Springs Theatre. He also was a History Teacher in the public schools here, including at Hillsborough High School.

We were meeting for lunch and doing this for fun anyway, so I decided to try to record it as a history podcast.

Here is a link to our second episode about Sulphur Springs:
